Unleashing Creativity: Architectural Improvisation in the Desert

Designed by renowned American architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg, this house is celebrated as a prime example of organic residential architecture worldwide. Its significance is evident in its seamless integration with the natural surroundings.

The architect Before meeting Bev and Jay Doolittle, the owners of the land where the house now stands, Kellogg had already established a reputation through his notable works in the 1960s and 1970s. These included the Onion House in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, and the Surfer House in La Jolla, California. Kellogg's dedication to his craft was evident when he personally built the Onion House in Kailua-Kona after struggling to find a contractor willing to take on the ambitious project.

The clients Bev and Jay, both art school graduates and former art directors, decided to leave city life behind and explore the West in a camper. During this journey, Bev developed her unique "camouflage" painting style, which gained recognition in the fine-art world. In 1985, they purchased the land from Jay's father, Carl, with a vision to create an innovative and artistic residence.

A perfect match The Doolittles discovered Kellogg's work through the Friends of Keybar newsletter, which featured his projects like the Yen House in La Jolla and the Chart House Restaurant in Rancho Mirage. Impressed by his ability to harmonize architecture with nature, they reached out to Kellogg in 1986 with a detailed vision for their home. Kellogg's response was brief but expressed his interest in the project.

Throughout the construction process, the Doolittles trusted Kellogg's expertise and creativity, allowing him the freedom to bring their vision to life without strict budget constraints. Construction commenced in 1988.

The build Kellogg's design seamlessly blended the house into the rocky landscape, utilizing twenty-six cantilevered concrete columns anchored deep into the bedrock. The house, spanning approximately 6,000 square feet, features a unique architectural structure with minimal conventional walls. The incorporation of million-year-old granite boulders and extensive glass elements adds to its distinctive appeal.

One of the challenges faced during construction was transporting materials up to the house, including heavy windows that had to be carried up a 550-foot golf cart path.

A worthy interior Master craftsman John Vugrin contributed to the interior design, creating custom furniture, lighting, and built-ins that complemented Kellogg's architectural vision. Vugrin's attention to detail and creativity resulted in unique features like curved bookcases and site-specific furniture inspired by the Doolittles' preferences.

Following the Doolittles' decision to sell the house in 2014, Vugrin's work faced uncertainty until a new owner recognized the value of his craftsmanship. Today, Vugrin continues to create bespoke pieces for the house, maintaining its artistic essence.

The Kellogg-Doolittle House stands as a testament to collaboration between visionary clients, a renowned architect, and a skilled fabricator. The current owner welcomes visitors for filming, events, and limited stays each year.
